VFW Post 9257, 2 Fairfield Drive, Putnam Lake, NY - The event was more than successful!! It was stupendous!! The amount of people in attendance was just shy of 500 & the fund raising exceeded expectations. The event was a large mix of emotion consisting of tears, laughter, crying and a constant flow of handshakes & hugs. The families & friends of both John’s parents, Mary Anne & Bernard Curtin, packed the place to capacity & the overflow of people were accommodated by a fire pit & outside tent, which was put in place just for this event. Volunteers handled the smallest to the largest details & did whatever was asked of them…the tips earned by the bartenders & shuttle bus driver were handed over as part of the digging deep phenomena that overtook the place. The response from everyone was “This is for John”, “Give John our love”.
The Putnam Lake Community (The Lakers) & surrounding areas came to support not only John, but in solidarity joined together for one of their own, Bernard, who grew up in the center of this community & those community ties are stronger than ever. These friends, relatives and community members cannot comprehend what it feels like to be the mother or a father of a son who has sacrificed so dearly. Bernard has been by John’s side for evening shifts while caring for John and accompanies John to his PT & OT sessions. Bernard has missed out on presentations made by dignitaries during the day while he was on his rest / sleep period. Each family member caring for John has tried to support the other as they alternate between periods of fatigue & pure exhaustion.
The event started off with "The Pledge of Allegiance" followed by an introduction speech by Harvey Strodd, Commander of the Post, & Ed Gerrity. Ed read A New York State Assembly Citation to Lance Corporal John Curtin, "For His Service and Dedication to Our Country". In addition, The book "Medal of Honor" Portraits of Valor Beyond The Call Of Duty, personally signed by one of the recipients, Paul W. Bucha was acknowledged. These honors were presented to the family to be given to John. This was followed by “The National Anthem" as performed by Kelly Ann Crapa, a performance equal to any superstar, who bought the house down with her talent. The event was celebrated with music by the Irish Band “The Tipperary Knights”.
Also honoring the event was the presence of Senator Ball and Putnam County Sheriff, Donald B. Smith who shared his recent visit with John & his family and how very impressed him & his colleagues were with this “poster” soldier, Marine John G. Curtin. Sheriff Smith also acknowledged all the men & woman who are serving our country & the sacrifices being made in the interest of “Peace through Strength.
The event ended with the support group “TEAM JOHN” and plans are already in the works for the next & future upcoming fund raising events.
A job well done and a huge THANK YOU!! to all.
